Damore was sacked for "advancing harmful gender stereotypes" in August 2017 after the memo, in which he posited that psychological differences between men and women explain the gaping gender imbalance at Google, was leaked and went viral.
Diversity advocates at Google, many of whom were queer or transgender, told WIRED in January they were being targeted for harassment by coworkers in order to silence internal discussion around racial and gender diversity.
The lawsuit was filed in San Francisco County Superior Court and Chevalier is seeking damages for lost wages, emotional distress, punitive damages, and injunctive relief against those alleged harmful acts. News of the lawsuit was earlier reported by Gizmodo.
Just last month a similar lawsuit was filed by an ex-Google engineer James Damore, who was sacked after he circulated the misogynist iniquitous 33,000-word memo talking about diversity at the company. The lawsuit claimed Google discriminates against white men and conservatives.
But after he pushed back against the "online bullying" he and others were suffering at the hands of colleagues, Google terminated him, Chevalier claimed.
In a statement to the Verge, Chevalier said - "It is a cruel irony that Google attempted to justify firing me by claiming that my social networking posts showed bias against my harassers". "The anti-discrimination laws are meant to protect marginalized and underrepresented groups- not those who attack them".
Chevalier, a software developer and site reliability engineer with Google was sacked in November 2017, as per a Gizmodo report, over his posts against racism and sexism. According to the suit, Google objected to Chevalier's use of the phrase "white boys" in his blogpost because it "could be perceived as a generalization about race and gender". Shortly after the memo began to make national headlines, he was sacked by Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
Damore recently had a separate labour board complaint shot down by the US National Labor Relations Board, which stated in a guidance memo that Google was in the right to fire him. The agency believes that Damore was not ousted because he criticized the policies of Google, but over "unprotected discriminatory statements" in his memo.
Wednesday's lawsuit is another window into the internal of workings of Google's culture.
"An important part of our culture is lively debate". "But like any workplace, that does not mean anything goes". The firm's code of conduct prohibits promotion of harmful stereotypes based on race or gender, said spokeswoman Gina Scigliano.
Scigliano adds, "This is a very standard expectation that most employers have of their employees".
Tim Chevalier, who worked for Google for two years, claims he was let go for speaking out against discrimination because Google only lets employees "who represent the majority" speak.
