Boston Bruins sign forward Brian Gionta to 1-year contract

The Bruins continued their shuffling on Sunday, waiving defenseman Paul Postma and immediately signing free agent Brian Gionta to a one-year deal worth a pro-rated $700,000.

He most recently played with the Sabres during the 2016-17 season, but chose to hold off free agency for this year so he could compete in the Olympics.

Gionta was a captain for Team USA is the 2018 Winter Olympics and played in all of their games before losing to the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.

With Frank Vatrano traded to Florida earlier this week, it's likely that Gionta is stepping into the Boston mix as the club's new 13th forward.

Prior to joining the professional ranks, Gionta played four seasons (1997-2001) at Boston College, where he was a three-time Hobey Baker Award finalist and is the school's all-time leading scorer with 123 goals, to go along with 109 assists for 232 points in 164 career NCAA games.

On top of all this, the Bruins have a game later today with a 5 p.m. head-to-head in Buffalo. Gionta is from nearby Rochester, New York, and has a home in Buffalo.

As of Sunday afternoon, the Bruins are in third place in the Eastern Conference.
