  • Chumba and Dibaba reign supreme at Tokyo Marathon

Chumba, who previously won at the Japanese capital in 2014, reigned supreme in the men's competition as he won in 2hours, 5 minutes and 30seconds.

It was the second time in two years that Kipsang, who set a world record of 2:03:23 in 2013, has suddenly stopped running in a World Majors marathon, having failed to finish in Berlin last September. Second-place finisher Yuta Shitara set a Japanese record with his time of 2:06:11. American Amy Cragg also ran a massive PR of 2:21:42 (previous PR: 2:27:03) to finish third in the women's race.

This year's race, which marked the 12th, had about 36,000 participants.

Hiroto Inoue improved on his 2017 eighth-place result and finished fifth in 2:06:54, and compatriot Ryo Kiname was seventh in 2:08:08.

Trailing six runners with just under 10km to go, Shitara ran like a man possessed to pass all but one of them. He raised his first in celebration, broke the tape in 2:06:11 - five seconds under the old record, and a PR of nearly three minutes - and collapsed to the ground, completely spent from a history marathon effort. "Next year I'll try to run 2:04", he said.

Separately, parliament is pursuing a bill that will appropriate lands in Israel sold by churches to anonymous buyers since 2010. These moves were dubbed by the heads of churches as a "systematic campaign of abuse against Churches and Christians".

That is incredible strength and depth and putting it into perspective only five British men have broken the 2:09 barrier in total, never mind a single race.

Dibaba pulled away from there to win in 2 hours, 19 minutes, 51 seconds.

Just as in London, Cragg had to dig incredibly deep late in the late stages of the race as she had come through 30k on 2:20:27 pace before starting to struggle over the final 10 kilometers.

Wolrd Championships bronze medalist Cragg becomes only the fifth American to run sub 2:22.

In the women's category, Ethiopia's Dibaba claimed the Tokyo Marathon for the second time in her career.
