  • Samsung launches the Galaxy S9 smartphone to take on Apple's iPhone X

At the Unpacked event ahead of MWC 2018 in Barcelona, the South Korean manufacturer has provided all the juicy details about its latest flagship smartphones: the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ can shoot 4K videos at 60 fps in the new HVEC format.

Last year, Samsung blew fans away with an absolutely stunning device that kick-started a trend of edge-to-edge displays.

The cameras and fingerprint scanners are positioned differently though, as while both phones have dual-lens cameras on the back, the S9 Plus stacks them vertically with the fingerprint scanner below, while the Note 8 has them horizontally placed with the scanner to the side. By the end of March, meanwhile, AT&T says that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be available to FirstNet users, the carrier's network for first responders.

In the United States, the two handsets will be available in Lilac Purple, Midnight Black, and Coral Blue. The IP68 certification ensures that S9 and S9+ are waterproof and dustproof smartphones.

Other than that they're very similar, with both being curved, both using Super AMOLED, both having 18.5:9 aspect ratios and both having QHD+ resolutions.

Koh Dong-jin, who heads the IT & Mobile Communications Division of Samsung Electronics Co., poses for a photo with the Galaxy S9 smartphone in this photo released by the company on February 26, 2018. It's still sporting 4GB of RAM, though, while the S9 Plus has a larger 6GB allocation. In most of the world you get the octa-core Exynos 8895, which is the predecessor of the 9810 and has four cores running at 2.3GHz and four clocked at 1.7GHz.

If you're in the United States you get the octa-core Snapdragon 835, which again is the last generation of that chip and has four cores clocked at 2.35GHz and four running at 1.9GHz.

Samsung launched the S9 at the mobile gadget fair in Barcelona, attracting thousands of reporters to see how the world's biggest smartphone maker could innovate in a category in which the big players are technologically closer than ever.

Sky Mobile leads the pack in terms of value, offering the Galaxy S9 from just £33 per month on its Swap24 plan.

Samsung Electronics Co. early on Monday showcased the new flagship Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus smartphones, which boast improved cameras and augmented reality (AR)-powered features.

The Galaxy Note 8's lenses both have a fixed aperture, there's a wide-angle one that's f/1.7 and a telephoto one that's f/2.4, so it's less flexible, but we found it to be a highly capable camera. The secondary lens is also optically stabilised for sharper capture.

There a few neat tricks the camera can do too, such as recording 960fps super slow-mo footage at 720p (although limited to six-second videos), and iPhone X-style "AR Emojis" - although they seem just as pointless as Apple's Animojis. The S9 can automatically detect when there's high-speed motion to record, such as a cork popping off a bottle of champagne. With this combination, it is easier to unlock under bright sunlight and even if your face is partially covered, you can still unlock with your eyes.

The S9 will be the first Samsung device to feature the company's equivalent of Animoji, which they are calling "Animated Emoji". The Galaxy S9 sports a 3,000mAh battery, while the S9 Plus comes with a 3,500mAh unit.

Photography is also a major factor, but the truth is the cameras in all the major premium phones of the a year ago or so have been first rate, with often only subtle (and very subjective) differences in picture quality. The S9 and S9+ feature Quick Charge 2.0 and wireless charging.
