Bjorgen won gold in the 30km in Sochi four years ago.

Norway's Marit Bjørgen secured the eighth Winter Olympic Games gold medal of her career as she eased to a dominant victory in the women's 30 kilometres mass start classic race at Pyeongchang 2018 today.

The most decorated Winter Olympian of all time finished nearly two minutes ahead of Finland's Krista Pärmäkoski.

She's one of two cross-country skiers to have multiple Olympic medals in the 30km.

Bjoergen, who previously said this was her final Olympic race, finished her career with 15 medals, leaving her as the most decorated Winter Olympian in history.

Bjoergen's emotions got the better of her as she crossed the line and the most successful Winter Olympic athlete of all time explained that she was thinking of her young son as she did so.

Krista Parmakoski, of Finland, captured the silver and Stina Nilsson, of Sweden, took home bronze.

Bjoergen's win was also big for the Norwegian team, which finished with 14 medals in cross-country skiing in Pyeongchang, breaking the record of 13 held by the Soviet Union in 1988. The Norwegians reached the podium in all but one cross-country event.

Not only did the win move Bjørgen level with the legendary duo of Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Bjørn Dæhlie for all-time Winter Olympic gold's, it also saw Norway jump back to the top of the medal table ahead of Germany.

They only need half of the 120 second powerplay to make the extra man count however, with Kirill Kaprizov scoring the golden goal to secure the OAR's second gold of these games, and 17th medal overall in South Korea.

A total of 14 of them were gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze.

After winning the United States' first Olympic gold medal and first medal in 42 years in the women's team sprint, Jessie Diggins placed in seventh place in the 30 km, finishing in 1 hours, 25 minutes, 54.7 seconds.
