  • Sri Ram Sene Chief Pramod Muthalik 30 Others Acquitted by Court in 2009 Mangaluru Pub Attack Case

Over 30 Sri Ram Sene activists had allegedly barged into the pub on January 24, 2009, and assaulted some women and men, claiming they were violating traditional Indian values.

A Karnataka court on Monday acquitted Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik and all other accused in the 2009 pub attack in Mangaluru, Karnataka, citing the lack of evidence, NDTV reported.

The video of dozens of Ram Sene members mercilessly thrashing women at Amnesia pub in the port city in protest against western culture and western dress had gone viral across the world.

"Cases were filed against us under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) without evidence and witnesses".

However, in 2010, Muthalik said that the attack was a "big mistake" as it had affected his group's reputation.

About the accused who were acquitted on Monday, Karandlaje said, "They were in jail for six years without any reason".

The incident had, in some ways, brought to light the extreme cases of moral policing carried out by self-styled protectors of culture in coastal districts of Karnataka and other parts of the country.

The incident sparked off nationwide outrage against Muthalik, with youngsters launching a "pink chaddi Campaign" in protest against moral policing by sending him pink innerware.

Sri Rama Sene became infamous after this attack and Muthalik was strongly criticised for his and his Sene workers behaviour in the name of "Moral Policing".

Just before the 2014 elections, Muthalik even joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), albeit only for a few hours as party members objected to his induction.
