World number one Roger Federer finished off Federico Delbonis in a rain-disrupted match on Sunday to reach the third round at Indian Wells as five-time champion Novak Djokovic was toppled.

Marin Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion who lost to Federer in the final of this year's Australian Open, eased to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Marton Fucsovics.

"When you go from night to day [in consecutive days, you're usually] playing a different opponent", said Federer, who couldn't remember the last time he had played a match that was interrupted overnight.

Roger played much better than in the second round against Delbonis, losing serve once at the start of the match and breaking Filip five times from eight opportunities he created.

Federer, who took over from Rafael Nadal as the top ranked ATP men's singles player in February, needs to make, at least, the semi-finals in order to remain at the summit.

Federer - the defending champion and a five-time victor of this event - required less than an hour on Stadium 1 to get the better of the Serbian world number 28.

World No. 109 Taro Daniel sent the five-time BNP Paribas Open victor tumbling out of the event with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 victory at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Djokovic And Zverev Upset At Indian Wells
Federer's match was not the only one postponed by a persistent rain Saturday evening. Yet he failed to serve out the opening set at 5-3 before losing it in a tiebreaker.

Djokovic shut down his season after Wimbledon in 2017 and despite not being at his best, made a decision to play at this year's Australian Open where he was ousted by South Korea's Hyeon Chung in the fourth round.

"For me it felt like first match I ever played on the tour".

On his first appearance since the Australian Open in January, the 30-year-old Serbian lost 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 to his Japanese opponent at the at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and looked badly affected by the elbow injury he was forced to have an operation on last month. "Very weird", Djokovic said.

Wozniacki hit two aces and won 64 percent of her first-serve points in the two hour, 17 minute match.

Indications that he was in good touch came in the second game of the match when he sealed a break to go 2-0 ahead.

He will next take on American world No. 21 Sam Querry, who ousted Germany's Mischa Zverev 6-4, 7-5.
