US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Monday slammed last month's mass abduction of schoolgirls in northern Nigeria and promised Washington's "full support" in the country's fight against Boko Haram jihadists.

He said his government is prioritizing negotiation rather than military option.

UNITED States Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson on Monday met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja before expressing his hope to journalists that Dapchi school girls recently abducted by Boko Haram would be released peacefully through some sort of negotiation.

He rather indicated that Nigeria was working with worldwide organizations and negotiators, to ensure that the girls were brought back unharmed.

The Secretary expressed concern about the recent attacks and abductions and agreed to expand counterterrorism cooperation to diminish the threats to USA and Nigerian interests.

"We are trying to be careful".

We hope that something can be developed to release these girls quickly.

The visiting Secretary of State commended President Buhari on his effort in the anti-corruption war, the statement by Femi Adesina said.
