Political observers here believe that Sehrai will ultimately succeed 88-year-old Geelani as the head of the Hurriyat Conference as well.

According to sources, the decision was in the offing for sometime considering the health of octogenarian separatist leader.

"Geelani has taken the decision that Sehrai will take over as the new chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat". He handed over the responsibilities to his close aide, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai who was earlier the general secretary of the organisation.

A stanch and steadfast pro-freedom leader, Sehrai will now lead TeH, an effective constituent of Hurriyat Conference (G). He was an MLA from the Sopore constituency of Jammu and Kashmir three times. Last Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a charge sheet against Kashmiri separatists leader in the alleged terror funding case in a Delhi court. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq leads the "moderate" faction of the group.

Geelani has been repeatedly criticised by Indian authorities for promoting violence in the state and working as an agent of Pakistan.

Sources in TeH said that a meeting was held at its office at Hyderpora and Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai was elected as interim chairperson till elections are held, adding that the election was delayed because most of the activists of Tehreek Hurriyat are imprisoned. Before that, Sehrai had given a miss to executive council meetings of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and the Hurriyat as well.
