Google strives to turn searches into cash

  • Google strives to turn searches into cash

Google on Monday announced Shopping Actions, a new marketing initiative that will allow its Search and Assistant services to sell products directly to consumers in exchange for a portion of revenues retailers generate in such a manner.

Google says it will use a pay-per-sale model, which means it's only taking a cut of the sale when a shopper makes a purchase.

According to Reuters, Google is teaming up with Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Costco and Ultra.

The previously unreported initiative sprang from Google's observation that tens of millions of consumers were sending image searches of products, asking "Where can I buy this?" The feature would, in theory, give customers the convenience of buying from multiple retailers at once, instead of going back over to Amazon to complete their purchases.

"We have taken a fundamentally different approach from the likes of Amazon because we see ourselves as an enabler of retail", Alegre said.

Google has launched a new program called Shopping Actions that will allow users to purchase items through Google search and Google Assistant.

As Search Engine Journal noted in a follow-up article, there are several questions that remain unanswered, such as whether retailers partnering with Google in this program will see their sites gain more prominence in Google's search results, whether those sites will be clearly labelled as those of paid partners, and whether Google will steer users towards the cheapest products.

Google has improved its smartphone experience, and mobile searches on Google asking where to buy products rose by 85% over the past two years, Daniel Alegre, Google's president for retail and shopping, told Reuters.

Ulta Beauty's average order value has jumped 35 percent since partnering with Google, Chief Executive Officer Mary Dillon said.

According to the report, it claims that Google is selling its new anti-Amazon tools because of its denominator search presence in the world. For example, a shopper looking for sneakers on Google on his phone can see a retailer's listing and add that to his Google Express cart.
