  • David Lammy's urgent question on Windrush generation

There is growing unease among politicians about the situation, which has affected an unknown number of people who arrived in the United Kingdom as children, but never formally naturalised or applied for a British passport.

Nokes encouraged those affected to make contact with the Home Office and said the government is determined to help people build up a picture of their life in the United Kingdom even if they might lack the required documents.

They are known as the Windrush generation - a reference to the ship, the Empire Windrush, which brought workers from the West Indies to Britain in 1948.

However, the Home Office did not keep a record of those granted leave to remain or issue any paperwork confirming it, meaning it is hard for the individuals to now prove they are in the United Kingdom legally.

Concerns have been raised following cases where people who came to the United Kingdom as children in the 1950s and 1960s were now facing immigration issues despite having lived in the United Kingdom all their adult lives. All eight were children when they first arrived in the UK.

Prime Minister Theresa May is under pressure to resolve the status of thousands of British residents who arrived from the Caribbean decades ago and are now being denied basic rights after being incorrectly identified as illegal immigrants.

Turkey does not stand by any country on Syria: Deputy PM
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had spoken with his US counterpart Donald Trump over the issue ahead of the airstrikes. Turkey , said Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag, does not stand with or against any country on Syria.

The announcement came after a cross-party group of 140 MPs wrote to Mrs May calling for an "immediate and effective" response to problems faced by members of the Windrush generation.

"What is going on is grotesque, immoral and inhumane". It is a stain on our nation's conscience and the Prime Minister must act urgently to right this historic wrong. The passengers on the Windrush were taking advantage of the 1948 British Nationality Act, which gave the status of citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies (CUKC status) to all subjects in the country's Empire.

"That these individuals are being treated with such contempt, disrespect and lack of dignity is a national disgrace", said David Lammy, an opposition Labour member of parliament and the author of the letter to the prime minister.

The home secretary, Amber Rudd, is expected to provide more details in a statement in the Commons on Monday afternoon.

But Europe's chief Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt branded the Windrush scandal "deeply worrying", as fears that similar treatment will be given to European Union citizens after Brexit amount.
