French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday said he had convinced U.S. President Donald Trump to maintain troops in Syria, as he defended France's participation in joint airstrikes.

The French president said on Sunday that Paris had convinced the USA administration to "stay in Syria long term". "We convinced him it was necessary to remain there", Mr. Macron said in a television interview Sunday.

But she added that the U.S. was "determined to completely crush" the Islamic State group and prevent its return.

Limiting the strikes to these specific targets was not necessarily Trump's initial plan, Macron said.

"They have not used chlorine themselves but they have methodically built the worldwide community's inability to act through diplomatic channels to stop the use of chemical weapons", he said. (Though it should be said that Macron is one of the few non-authoritarian leaders Trump seems to respect.) In any case, the claim is testament to the depth of Trump's remarkable capriciousness on all matters, including those that concern the life and death of American soldiers.

The United States, Britain and France carried out a wave of pre-dawn strikes against Syria's regime on April 14, 2018 in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack.

Two polls show Trump approval below 40%
The president said it's "hard to believe" he is at 50 percent in the Rasmussen poll , given all the "phony stories and Fake News". According to the poll, 34 percent of respondents strongly approve of Trump's performance, while 40 percent highly disapprove.

Macron added that the strikes on Syria had been "perfectly carried out".

Macron said the U.S., Britain and France had "full worldwide legitimacy to intervene" with the strikes, to enforce global humanitarian law.

Mr Macron said he still wanted dialogue with all parties, including Russian Federation, to try to find a political solution and would go ahead with a planned trip to Moscow next month.

He also claimed France was the most active country in the diplomatic arena and at the United Nations, and said his country wanted to include Western powers, Russian Federation and Turkey in a new diplomatic initiative to find a sustainable political solution in Syria. It wouldn't be the first time he'd changed his mind on Syria, after all.

After the US, France and Britain launched missile strikes on the country over an alleged chemical gas attack, the French president noted that Western top priority is preparing "a long-term political alternative which will allow a transition in a constitutional framework". There are no changes to his planned trip to Russian Federation next month, he said.
