  • James Harrison announced his retirement on Instagram Monday morning ending his 15-year career in which he spent most of his time with the Steelers

Harrison will be most commonly remembered for his exploits as part of the Pittsburgh Steelers, even though he ended his career with the New England Patriots.

But after barely featuring with the team last season, Harrison was released and subsequently signed with the New England Patriots to help them during their run to the Super Bowl.

At the end of the season, he entered free agency.

Harrison, 39, posted a collage of pictures of his two sons and noted he's "missed way too much for way too long ... and I'm done".

He finished off the post with the hashtag #2ndAndFinalRetirement.

Harrison is the Steelers' all-time leader in sacks with 80.5. He was a Pro Bowler for five straight seasons from 2007-2011, a First-Team All-Pro selection in 2008 and 2010, and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.

Harrison, who will turn 40 on May 4, played for the Steelers most of his career, starting as an undrafted rookie who spent most of his time on the practice squad in 2002. He retired briefly in September 2014 only to be lured back to the Steelers.

Longtime Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison is taking a second crack at retirement. Harrison indicated during the playoffs he thought he had another year in him, but it appears he's changed his mind.

He played 14 of his 15 National Football League seasons with the Steelers, twice earning first-team All-Pro honours and being named to the Pro Bowl five times in consecutive seasons from 2007-11.
