  • Wetherspoon boss Tim Martin: We'll shut down our social media after privacy, addiction and trolling concerns

In 2018, it is unusual to find a business without a social media presence, and.

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon is closing its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts following the abuse directed at MPs and others.

"It's becoming increasingly obvious that people spend too much time on Twitter (Frankfurt: A1W6XZ - news), Instagram and Facebook, and struggle to control the compulsion".

The spokesman confirmed the decision is not related to any specific incident and no JD Wetherspoon account itself has been involved in the trolling of any MPs or ethnic or religious minorities.

Wetherspoon's founder Tim Martin said on Monday that all its accounts would be shut down, effective immediately.

In the aftermath of the surprise announcement, "many commentators suspected it was a publicity stunt", The Guardian reports - but the bargain boozer has good reason to call time on its social media accounts.

'I am gay' protest rocks China's Weibo after 'clean-up campaign'
But Weibo's crackdown backfired after tens of thousands of users protested against the LGBT ban under the hashtag "I am gay". He wrote,"If I don't say anything today, there probably won't be any chance to do so in the future".

Recent concerns regarding the misuse of personal data and "the addictive nature of social media" also played a part in JDW's decision to remove itself from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, the statement continued.

Mr Martin said Wetherspoon would remain as vocal as ever, but would instead use its magazine and website as well as the press for news updates.

Martin's vocal support for Vote Leave during the European Union referendum led to Twitter campaigns calling for a boycott of the chain, while Facebook pages for Wetherspoon's pubs have proven "a magnet for bad reviews". He said that he does not believe that closing the accounts will have any affect on the business "whatsoever".

"We were also concerned that pub managers were being side-tracked from the real job of serving customers", he said.

Asked by the BBC whether Wetherspoon's move could start a business trend, Mr Martin said he hoped not.
