  • A nationwide technical outage has shut down Woolworths registers forcing stores to close their doors

Signs were put up at a number of Woolworths stores apologising for the problem.

Around 4:30pm, customers began to report stores they were shopping in were closing and they had been told an IT issue affecting the cash registers was to blame.

Registers shut down with stores unable to make sales shortly after 4pm, leaving consumers with trolleys full of shopping but no way to pay.

Social media posts indicate stores impacted locally include Walkerston and Caneland Central. Others said stores were being closed and that they were being turned away.

"They've told everyone just to leave their food and leave the store".

A nationwide technical glitch forced Woolworths to halt trading this afternoon, with shutters coming down on stores across Australia.

The supermarket giant has not yet revealed the cause of the outage. At Haymarket in Sydney, customers were told to return in "an hour", according to one tweet for ABC journalist Michael Janda. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused".

News Corp Australia has contacted Woolworths for comment.
