  • Kenedy of Chelsea in action during the Barclays Premier League match between Chelsea and Norwich City at Stamford Bridge

"Chelsea's Marcos Alonso has been charged with violent conduct following an incident with Southampton's Shane Long", an FA statement said.

Earlier, NAIJ.com had reported how Chelsea secured a remarkable comeback victory with three goals in eight minutes as Antonio Conte's men beat Southampton in five-goal thriller at St Mary's stadium.

Referee Mike Dean appeared to have a clear view of Alonso's challenge. The FA confirmed that neither match official saw the incident in real time, but the challenge was caught on video, and the English governing body thus chose to punish Alonso retroactively.

Chelsea wing back Marcos Alonso has been retroactively charged with violent conduct by the Football Association.

However, the FA has since reviewed footage and sanctioned the Spaniard, who has until 1700 GMT on Wednesday to respond.

"Off the ball incidents which are not seen at the time are referred by The FA to a panel of three former elite match officials".

Sky Sports said that Southampton coach Mark Hughes accused Alonso of nearly breaking Long's leg in the challenge, which happened when Chelsea were 0-1 down in the English Premier League (EPL) game.

"There is one thing in his mind there, and that is to hurt Shane Long and Mike Dean is looking right at the incident".
