  • President Donald Trump prepares to speak in the Oval Office last week

Comey also discussed the briefing of Trump's alleged pee tape, describing the meeting with the president over the matter as "really weird" and like an "out of body experience". Trump said in one of a series of tweets fired off Sunday before the interview.

The wide-ranging interview with ABC News also came ahead of Tuesday's release of Comey's memoir, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership", in which he details his interactions with the Republican president.

"I hope folks read the whole thing and find it useful", referring to Trump as the counterpoint to former USA president George W Bush and Barack Obama.

The ex-FBI chief's comments in an ABC News interview are nearly certain to escalate his war of words with the president.

In an interview with ABC News that aired Sunday night, the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation chief says he could not discount the possibility that Russian Federation might have something on the president.

If ABC News' Sunday night special about James Comey felt condensed, that's because almost five hours of interview was compressed into an hour-long program. "It's possible, but I don't know".

In an excerpt shown on Saturday, Mr Comey said his belief that Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 presidential election was a factor in his decision to disclose the investigation into her emails.

For all of his skewering assessments of Trump, Comey doesn't think that the solution is impeachment-because he believes that it's important for the American electorate to correct this abhorrent mistake themselves. There is no indication he is under investigation for doing so. Comey's firing then spurred a special counsel and a broader investigation into his campaign and administration - an investigation that now includes potential obstruction of justice and Trump's business dealings. After facing widespread backlash at the time, Trump apologized for comments he made on the recording - in which he bragged about sexually assaulting women and "grabbing them by the p-y" - but went on to repeatedly dismiss them as "locker room talk". "It's possible", Comey said. And then he said, 'Another reason you know it's not true is I'm a germaphobe.

A little after 9 a.m. Sunday (early Monday NZ time), Trump returned his focus to Comey.

Trump press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump's reaction was that Comey has "been proven to be dishonest", and has "such a lack of credibility".

Trump also attacked Comey for saying in the book that political considerations may have driven him to reopen the Clinton investigation in the last days of the election campaign.

"That culture of leadership comes to mind constantly when I think of the Trump Administration", said Comey, referring to the stage of his career in which he fought organized crime in NY.

This week's edition of the latter featured none other than James Comey, the former FBI director who was sacked by POTUS after he failed to drop the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

"I think he's morally unfit to be president", Comey said, in his first televised interview since being fired in May a year ago, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

“I dont remember spelling it out, ” he added, “but it had to have been that shes going to be elected president and if I hide this from the American people, shell be illegitimate the moment shes elected, the moment this comes out.”.

"Usually you don't have anybody in the FBI talking about ongoing investigations", Anderson said, adding that "if Jim says something in one interview, then says something in his book thats different, then gives a different version of it in another interview, and they use him as a witness which I'm sure they will, then that could become a problem" for the Russian Federation investigation.
