  • India Among 170 Countries To Ink Deal To Reduce Shipping Emissions By 2050

An agreement to reduce shipping Carbon dioxide emissions by "at least" 50% on 2008 levels by 2050 has been welcomed by global port authorities. "Preparations on longer term actions should also begin", Bulc and Cañete said in a joint statement.

While negotiations were still ongoing, Mark Simmonds, policy manager at the British Ports Association, commented that action on GHG shipping emissions must be fully global, practical and not distort competition.

It called the move, agreed on Friday in London, "a first but critical step towards the industry's decarbonisation".

The initial GHG strategy was adopted by IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), during its 72nd session at IMO Headquarters in London, UK, which was attended by more than 100 IMO Member States.

Kitack Lim, secretary general, IMO, encouraged delegates to continue developing the strategy. This working group will be tasked with developing follow-up actions to the Initial strategy, further considering how to progress reduction of GHG emissions in order to advise the committee and reporting to the next MEPC session, which meets October 22-26.

"This is a ground-breaking agreement - a Paris Agreement for shipping", said Peter Hinchliffe, ICS Secretary General.

Head of the Liberia delegation at MEPC Isaac Jackson told The Loadstar Liberia could "fully support" the initial draft strategy. To meet the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, whole life cycle emissions need to be accounted for. "The IMO has taken a giant step that is very significant in reducing GHG emission in the context of the Paris Agreement".

"While it may not be enough to give my country the certainty it wanted, it makes it clear that global shipping will now urgently reduce emissions and play its part in giving my country a pathway to survival", said President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands Hilda C. Heine. President Hilda Heine said: "The IMO has made history, and while it may not give my country the certainty it wanted, it makes clear global shipping will now urgently reduce emissions".

Expectations are that over the next few years this target will be tightened and brought closer in line with the Paris Agreement commitments.

Global director of corporates and supply chain at Carbon Disclosure Project, Dexter Galvin, said while the progress was "good to see" the pledged 50% reduction did not go far enough. "The customers of shipping companies are increasingly demanding action and transparency from their suppliers".

But how is it proposed these targets - however ambitious they turn out to be - will be met?

Continuing the momentum of work on this issue, MEPC agreed to hold the fourth Intersessional meeting of the Working Group on Reduction of GHG emissions from ships later in the year.

Nations meeting at the International Maritime Organization adopted an initial strategy for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, with the goal of phasing them out as soon as possible.
