  • Jenna Bush Hager tearfully gives update on grandmother Barbara Bush's health

A top NY doctor says former first lady Barbara Bush's decision to stop aggressive treatment for lung and heart disease at 92 is "a valiant one".

The website that hosted the Barbara Bush death article, which can be viewed here, stated that she died "peacefully in her sleep" on Sunday, April 15 2018, according to a spokesman for the Bush family, apparently hours after it was announced that she would not be seeking further medical care.

McGrath did not elaborate on the nature of the first lady's health problems but on Monday said she's suffered in recent years from congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. "She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving".

While the Bush family has not mentioned a specific illness involving Mrs.

The 36-year-old Bush Hager told the "Today" show cast that her grandmother is in "great spirits", adding, "She is the best grandma anybody could have ever had - or have". They had six children and have been married longer than any presidential couple in American history. The other was Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, the nation's second president, and mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president. They affectionately call her "Ganny". Bush and those like her are the most courageous. But on the inside, she has been described as "fiery", a woman of "common sense" and a champion of literacy.

"She'll always be known and revered as the First Lady of literacy", said Julie Finck, president of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation.
