Kendrick Lamar Awarded Pulitzer Prize for DAMN

But in a year when the media has been galvanised by digging into Trump's chaotic presidency, Lamar's award for his album Damn also stood out as the rapper from Compton, California became the first rap artist to win a Pulitzer in music.

It is the first non-classical or jazz work to win the award.

The 30-year-old Californian won the prize for his album Damn, released in April 2017. Kendrick has been on a winning streak that began early this year.

The 2018 Pulitzer Prizes to mark the best in journalism was awarded at Columbia University in New York City on Monday.

The recognition comes on the heels of growing acceptance of hip-hop from reigning cultural institutions over the past year, including LL Cool J becoming the first hip-hop artist to be acknowledged by the Kennedy Center Honors and Jay-Z the first rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The New York Times received an award for Public Service, for reporting led by Jodi Kantor and Meghan Twohey.

This award was given to the Press Democrat for the coverage of one of the most devastating wildfires in California.

The Pulitzer for investigative reporting was awarded to The Washington Post for its expose of Roy S. Moore, the Republican Senate candidate in Alabama, whose bid for higher office was upended after the daily uncovered that he had groped and harassed multiple women, one as young as 14.
