  • Macron says he 'convinced' Trump to stay in Syria ahead of strikes

And now, French President Emmanuel Macron claims that he has convinced Trump to commit US forces to stay in Syria for a while after all.

Appearing in a two-hour live broadcast on French television BFM and online investigative site Mediapart, the 40-year-old leader said the U.S., Britain and France had "full worldwide legitimacy to intervene" in order to enforce global humanitarian law.

France used its Rafale jets to target chemical research and storage sites in a Damascus suburb in Syria after Macron had said, "The red line had been crossed".

Mr Macron described the alleged chemical weapons attack on April 7 in the Syrian city of Douma as being responsible for the "deaths of dozens of men, women and children". "We convinced him to remain", he said, speaking in the majestic room of Chaillot National Theater, with the Eiffel Tower shining in the background".

The foreign minister said a large part of Syria's chemical arsenal had been destroyed, and all French jets returned safely.

Macron also offered to play the role of intermediary between the United States and Russian Federation. "We convinced him that it was necessary to stay".

He also conceded it was sweet to triumph in a country where some critics claimed his purist principles couldn't flourish. United held out for a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford on December 13, riding Romelu Lukaku's 25th-minute goal to victory.

Shortly after the interview aired, the White House said the United States mission in Syria "has not changed".

"The U.S. mission has not changed - the President has been clear that he wants United States forces to come home as quickly as possible", press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

She added that Washington was "determined to completely crush" the Islamic State group in the country "and create the conditions that will prevent its return". "In addition we expect our regional allies and partners to take greater responsibility both militarily and financially for securing the region".

And in a reference to Trump's raging on Twitter at Russian Federation over the possibility of strikes, Macron added: "The second thing is that we have also convinced him that he must limit his strikes to chemical weapons, at a time when there was a media furore via tweet, as I'm sure you noticed".

Macron added that the strikes on Syria had been "perfectly carried out".

"The strikes against Syria are without proof, without a United Nations mandate, and against it, without a European agreement and without a vote of the French Parliament", Melenchon said on Twitter.
