  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 will launch in Malaysia on 24 April

The device will be called as Redmi S2 and packs entry-level specifications.

The phone will come with a dual camera having 12 megapixels + 5 megapixels sensors. The device will ship with a proven processor, dual cameras and face unlock feature, which may prove to be a USP for Redmi S2 in the budget segment. There will also be a MicroSD card slot for further expanding the storage on this device. While the OTA update has reached some devices, like the Redmi Note 5 and some Redmi Note 4 devices, the flashable ROMs are now available to download from the Mi Community. The files specifically mention Chinese and Indian variants of the device giving us an indication that the device will be launched in China and India. Xiaomi has not announced any plans about the Redmi S2 at the time of writing. Our guess is that Xiaomi will market the cameras heavily for this new device, though we can't say for sure until the company starts teasing the device through its official channels. The selfie camera is likely to feature Portrait Mode. It will either be a 12MP Sony IMX486 or the 12MP OmniVision OV12A10 sensor along with 5MP Samsung S5K5E8 sensor as the secondary one. For selfies, the Redmi S2 comes with a single 5MP sensor from Samsung. The firmware files revealed the device would be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, which was previously present on smartphones such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 5, Mi A1 and Mi Max 2. It looks like the main camera will be borrowed straight from Redmi Note 5 Pro. However, Xiaomi, in India launches devices in several memory configurations, so we might see a 2GB+16GB variant and 3GB+32GB variant launching. The company is working on bringing the device nearly a month after the company announced its Redmi 5 in the market.
