ABC wasn't 'confident about the creative path' for 'Designated Survivor'

ABC cancelled the Kiefer Sutherland vehicle after two seasons last week, but the studio behind the series, eOne, is now in talks with Netflix about picking up season 3. It means tomorrow's Season 2 finale is serving as the series finale - at least on the broadcast network, as co-producer eOne is now shopping the series.

Meanwhile, at the 2018 ABC Upfronts on May 15 in New York City, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said the decision to cancel Designated Survivor was "a hard one". While they've declined in the second season, the delayed viewing numbers are promising, which also bodes well for the streaming service.

"Creatively, we've had a lot of behind-the-scenes churn on the show in terms of the number of showrunners involved", she reportedly noted.

If the show gets a third season, a new showrunner would be introduced, marking the show's fifth person in the job. The network screened the entire opening act at its 2016 upfront presentation, where Sutherland received a huge ovation.

The outlet reports that Dungey's comments may be related to the fact that Designated Survivor was constantly changing showrunners in its short two-season run.
