Tallmadge Wakeman D'Elia, who went by Wake, died on May 5 in St. Petersburg, Florida after his vape pen ignited a fire in the upstairs bedroom of his family's home.

The Florida man was found to be covered by burns as the exploding vape pen turned into a lethal projectile. It still remains unclear as to what prompted the pen to combust in the first place; however, shoddy manufacturing may be an option.

An autopsy reported released Tuesday blames the man's vape pen for his injuries. Officials found him with a wound to his top lip area and areas of burns to his body.

The vape was manufactured by Smok-E Mountain.

E-cigarettes that are similar in size and shape to traditional cigarettes come with a smaller wattage unit and therefore may not have the power to fail as dramatically, said Thomas Kiklas, chief financial officer of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association.

A representative from Smok-E Mountain told ABC Action News that their devices do not explode.

"Make sure that you use the charger that comes with the battery, and make sure the charger has a shutoff device, an automatic shutoff device, so it's not overcharged".

The report blamed the incidents on the prevalence of lithium-ion batteries in the products.

While the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion are unknown, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises against carrying e-cig batteries loose in pockets to avoid coming in contact with coins, keys or metal objects.

Explosions involving vape pens are uncommon, but faulty devices have been the subject of a handful of media report in recent years. They include a man losing several teeth and suffering second-degree burns in January 2017 when a vape pen exploded.

In 2016, a vaping device blew up in a man's face in NY - knocking out his teeth, ripping a hole in his tongue and leaving his hands covered in burns.
