  • US curbs'possible on European firms over Iran Bolton

Iran's foreign minister says talks with the EU's foreign policy chief in Brussels were "constructive".

Jean Asselborn underlined his country's backing for the JCPOA in a Tuesday phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

President Donald Trump's long-anticipated decision to pull the US out of the Iran nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions on the Islamic Republic will have a swift effect on some big companies.

"One of the questions that we need to ask the Americans is whether their final objective is to make the Iranians yield on its nuclear programme or to get rid of the regime", said a senior French official, acknowledging that Paris was concerned by the ideological shift in Washington since John Bolton was appointed U.S. National Security Advisor.

Iran's ambassador to New Zealand Jalaladdin Namini Mianji told Morning Report New Zealand companies would risk losing trade deals if the country adhered to US President Donald Trump's threat of imposing sanctions. "We will all save it together".

"We all agreed that we have a relative in intensive care and we all want to get him or her out of intensive care as quickly as possible", European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini told reporters after the 90-minute meeting. Whatever decided should preserve and guarantee Iran's rights.

The deal was negotiated between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - plus Germany.

"The European signatories should make up for the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA and guarantee our rights".

And the Number 10 spokesman added: "The Prime Minister raised the potential impact of United States sanctions on those firms which are now conducting business in Iran".

Pompeo said he was "hopeful in the days and weeks ahead we can come up with a deal that really works, that really protects the world from Iranian bad behaviour, not just their nuclear program, but their missiles and their malign behaviour as well".

They include retaliatory sanctions, allowing the European Investment Bank to invest directly in Iran and coordinating euro-denominated credit lines from European governments.

Senior EU politicians recently threatened that the 28-nation bloc is ready to challenge any move that may harm their businesses in the Iranian market at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

By pulling out of the deal, the United States also undermined the diplomatic efforts to worldwide issues, he added.

White House National Security adviser John Bolton refreshed the threat on Sunday, saying USA sanctions could be imposed on European companies doing business with Iran. Bolton said on ABC's "This Week".

"Unfortunately once again we see that Washington is trying to revise key global agreements as it happens to Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as it happens to Jerusalem (al-Quds) problem and a number of other agreements", the top Russian diplomat said.

"In the end, the size of the USA market dwarfs any prospect of any benefit they can get from Iran", Maloney said.

Tehran has warned it is preparing to resume "industrial-scale" uranium enrichment "without any restrictions" unless Europe can provide solid guarantees that it can maintain the economic benefits it gained from the nuclear agreement despite the United States reimposing sanctions.

But the European Union officials were hopeful that diplomacy and the promise of economic benefits could keep Iran in the fold of a nuclear deal they see as essential to security. "It would not stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons".

With withdrawal from the JCPOA, the US has re-imposed the highest level of economic sanctions on Iran.

But European diplomats were despondent.

During the phone call Mrs May also congratulated the U.S. president on the safe return of three Americans who had been held in prison in North Korea.
