  • Oracle claims Google exfiltrates 1GB of data from Android phones every month

Coincidentally, a few days after the senators penned their letter, it emerged that Oracle had briefed Australia's competition regulator about Google's data-acquisition activities, complete with claims that Android devices send improbably large quantities of data home to Google each month. Regulators found that telecom service customers are unknowingly paying for gigabytes of mobile data mined by the US tech giant.

Oracle is of course in the middle of an ongoing lawsuit against Google in the U.S. with regards to Google supposedly using protected Java APIs in Android.

The spin-doctors of API apparently made a specific presentation to the ACCC as part of an existing inquiry into digital platforms, called by Australian media giants concerned about the effect of Google and Facebook on advertising markets in the region. We suggest our users download the apps from the trusted sources only and not download any malicious app that may affect their device's performance.

"Google claims Google Location History is opt-in, but both the device and application settings on Android phones frequently pushes users into providing 'consent, '" their letter reads. It is based on a recent report that claimed the American tech giant Google harvests large amounts of data from Android devices.

It can then report to advertisers how often online ads have led to store visits, according to Oracle.

"We are exploring how much consumers know about the use of location data and are working closely with the Privacy Commissioner".

Currently, there are 10 million users in Australia using androids.

Google hasn't confirmed the release date for Android P, but Trusted Reviews says some analysts believe a launch window of August is likely.

Google said it was collecting phones' nearest cell tower locations because that would let it deliver messages faster; it denied retaining that location, and later disabled the "service". A Google spokesperson had denied the alleged misuse of information, mentioning that the "location-data-harvesting system was separate from that one, being focused on messaging services", as reported by Fortune.
