The Ebola virus is highly contagious and causes a range of symptoms including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, generalized pain or malaise and in many cases internal and external bleeding.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is dealing with its ninth Ebola outbreak since the virus was discovered there in 1976.

The resolutions were made following the adoption of a motion moved by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos-Central) at the plenary on Tuesday.

She said, "The Senate recalls with great distress that an infected immigrant who arrived Nigeria on the 23rd of July was the index case of the ebola virus in Nigeria".

Tinubu, who doubles as Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment, said the tide, as at then, was stemmed by quick response of the government.

"The Senate is saddened that in spite of quick measures taken, the epidemic claimed eight lives including those of medical personnel who put their lives at risk to contain the disease".

Democratic Republic of Congo has reported 39 people suspected to be infected with Ebola virus.

Punch reports that 4,000 doses of Ebola vaccine would be sent to DRC by World Health Organization in the nearest furture.

The lawmaker said that unless hospitals were prepared properly and equipped with Ebola vaccines, it would be an epidemic Nigeria might be unable to take on.

The senator said if nothing is done given the country's population "we may well be on our way to creating a global situation". While it is too early to determine the extent of this Ebola outbreak, the alarming fatality rate has heaped pressure on health officials to act quickly in order to prevent the disease spreading beyond its current 60-kilometre radius.

Government health institutions in the country are now inactive following the industrial strike action by members of the Joint Health Sector Union, JOHESU.

The union had on April 18, embarked on industrial action due to the "insensitivity and lackadaisical attitude of drivers of the health sector".
