  • Demanding respect, thousands of teachers and students swarm North Carolina capital

The school district says many staff members are planning to attend the March for Students and Rally for Respect event in Raleigh.

Several North Carolina school systems are shut down for the day, because of the number of teachers who have requested off to attend. So organizers of Wednesday's march encouraged teachers to use a provision in state law that allows them to take personal leave with at least five days' advance notice - as long as a substitute is available and the teacher pays a $50 "required substitute deduction".

Another Eastern Carolina school system said it will be closed this Wednesday for students because of that big teacher rally in Raleigh. On Wednesday May 16, 2018, Alexander County Schools will be closed for students with an optional workday for all staff. Educators say they want to have a voice, and that the march will demand better pay and working conditions, like a decrease in class sizes.

He went on to say, "I know we've seen some raises over the last few years, but hopefully that money that's being sent back, it's not going to the administrative side of things, but actually getting into the teachers' hands or providing teachers' assistance, whatever they might need.
