The heavy rain and dust storm hit Delhi-NCR on Wednesday early morning. The storm struck the national capital and nearby regions around 3 AM on May 16.

Power distribution company BSES Delhi said it had put its teams on high-alert and were trying to restore power disruptions in some areas. It had also said that parts of Rajasthan could experience dust storms, and isolated areas of West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and most of Northeast India can also expect thunderstorms and strong winds. Now reports are coming that more than 80 people have died because of this thunderstorm or lightning strikes attacks in five states since last Sunday. In several areas, electricity poles were uprooted leaving resident without electricity.

Rain lashed parts of Delhi early Wednesday morning. At least 40 flights were diverted. The operations at the airport had to be shut down for close to two and half hours, sources at Air Traffic Control (ATC) at the airport had said earlier. Indian Railways function was disrupted as train movement on the section between the Hazrat Nizamuddin and Palwal stations halted due to tree felling.

Dust storms, hail and lightning claimed 53 lives in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi, according to a Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) report.

The India Meteorological Department has also predicted that Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh would witness thunderstorm accompanied by a squall in the next few days.

A wave of sandstorms and thunderstorms sweeping through in India have left at least 86 people dead and 100 others injured, authorities said Monday.
