Consequently, only four convicts - Abdul Sathar, Habib Salahi, Manzar Imam and Alam Jeb Afridi - will have to undergo imprisonment.

Though the prosecution failed to prove the charge that the accused had waged an armed war against the country, the accusation that they were members of a terror outfit could be proven. A special court of the National Investigation Agency will announce the sentencing tomorrow.

Another accused, Abdus Subhan Qureshi alias Tawqeer, a resident of Mumbai, was arrested in the case recently.

The case was investigated initially by the anti-terror wing of the Kerala Police but the NIA took it over considering its seriousness and national dimensions. Mehboob Sheikh, another accused, was killed in Bhopal allegedly while attempting to escape from jail.

The Keralites convicted in the case are first accused Shibili, fourth accused Shaduli (both hailing from Irattupetta in Kottayam district), fifth accused Muhammad Ansar Nadvi and eighth accused Abdul Sattar (both natives of Aluva). Investigations had revealed that the participants were imparted training in handling arms, manufacture of petrol bombs, motorbike racing, and rope climbing, etc., during the camp. The court had acquitted 17 of 35 defendants who faced the trial commenced in January past year.

As per the NIA's finding, the SIMI leaders had conspired to conduct training camps for its active operatives and had held such camps in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and many other places.
