Alexa developers get 8 new voices via Amazon Polly

17 May, 2018, 00:37 | Author: Darnell Taylor

This could include using multiple voices for different characters in a game, or simply having a voice other than the standard Alexa tone.

That's thanks to the Amazon Polly text-to-speech service, which Amazon is officially opening up to developers as part of a free preview. If your skill uses only a single voice today, changing the voice or adding different voices in the right places may allow you to provide an even more engaging experience. "It's as easy as that".

Polly will let skill developers choose from eight different English voices and a wide variety of non-English voices. We'll select a subset of the skills that apply, and will provide more information to those selected.

Along with HP, Acer and Asus debuted personal computers that are created to work with Alexa during the International Consumer Electronics Show 2018 (CES) that was held earlier this year in Las Vegas as part of a push by Amazon to spread its voice assistant to more third-party devices.

The eight voices will be in US English and will give devs who use them a chance to liven up their Alexa skills. An Alexa Skills Kit comprises tools, application programming interfaces (APIs), code samples and documentation to enable developers to add skills to the 10,000-plus voice recognition capabilities already available on Alexa.

Amazon Polly is a text-to-speech service that uses advanced deep learning technologies to synthesize speech that sounds like a natural human voice.
