  • World Cup winner Ray Wilson dies aged 83

An outstanding left-back, Wilson won 63 caps with 1966 a memorable year for him as he won the FA Cup with Everton at Wembley and a few weeks later the World Cup as hosts England beat West Germany 4-2 at the same stadium.

"Lady Norma and I are deeply saddened by the terrible news that Ray has passed away".

Charlton said Wilson's death was "awful news" that saddened him and wife Lady Norma, adding: "Ray was an excellent team-mate at global level for many years and a close friend". We shared some wonderful memories throughout our career and I had the pleasure of being his room-mate.

Following more struggles with injury Wilson was granted a free transfer and joined Oldham Athletic in 1969, a move which meant he ultimately missed out on Everton's First Division title win of 1970.

"The thoughts of everyone at Town are with Ray's wife, his sons and the rest of his family and friends at this hard time".

"It's very, very sad, disgusting news", former England goalkeeper Banks told Press Association Sport. He played in the last England team that had four, maybe five, world-class players... and he was certainly one of those.

Everton also paid tribute to Ray.

The Twitter account of fellow World Cup victor Jimmy Greaves tweeted: "RIP Ray Wilson".

"He is a World Cup victor and played in the last England team that had four, maybe five, world class players", Royle said.

"Ray is arguably the most successful and best-known player ever to pull on a Huddersfield Town shirt, having been a key member of England's World Cup-winning team in 1966".

Everton said it was "deeply saddened", and added Wilson was "unquestionably one of the finest footballers to wear the royal blue jersey".

Wilson sold his World Cup winner's medal in 2002.
