Birth rates fell for almost all age groups of women younger than 40 in 2017, sending overall fertility rates to a record low, US health officials reported Thursday. It shows that the overall birth rate in the USA is down 2 percent on the previous year, making it the lowest on record since 1987. That measure now stands at 1,764.5 births per 1,000 women - a 3 percent drop from 2016.

In 1980, nearly 50 percent of 25-year-old California women lived with an own child, census figures show.

Since 2007, fertility has fallen the most for the youngest women, but in the previous year, declines have set in for women in their 30s as well. The numbers are often subject to spikes and sudden dips, driven in large part by the country's economic scene, generational size, and other factors. Data for 2017 were compared with 2016 data and earlier years. "This will change the demographics of the nation, as there will be a growing number of older Americans in the coming years". The only group to see birth rates rise was women in their early 40s-the birth rate for teenagers was down a whopping 7%, meaning the teen birthrate is now down 55% from 2007.

About 84 percent of 36-year-old California women lived with an own child in 1980.

According to an AP report, experts say the falling birth rate may be due to millennials' changing attitudes about motherhood-essentially, they're more inclined to put it off and have fewer kids-as well as increased use of long-term contraception techniques.

For the third year in a row, both the preterm birth rate and the low birth weight rate rose.

For women in their 30s - an age group that had recently seen years of rising birth rates - the rate fell slightly in 2017. The 2017 rate of low birthweight was 8.27 percent, which was one of the highest levels reported since 2006. Normally, the drop-off in births is picked up by immigrants replenishing the population.
