  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaks during the 2018 budget debate at the lower house of parliament Bundestag in Berlin Germany

German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized in the lower house of parliament (Bundestag), the withdrawal of the United States government from the nuclear agreement with Iran. "This accord was unanimously approved by the UN Security Council, and therefore we - the UK, France, and Germany - as well as other European Union members along with us, believe that it is wrong to cancel this agreement in this situation", Merkel said during her speech in the German parliament.

"The question is whether you can talk better if you terminate an agreement or if you stay in it. we say you can talk better if you remain in it", she said, according to Reuters.

She added: "Britain, France and Germany were of the opinion that the agreement against Iran's nuclear armament is an agreement that certainly has weaknesses, but an agreement we should stand by".

Repudiating the result of more than a decade of diplomacy, Trump complained that the deal does not cover Iran's ballistic missiles, its role in regional wars or what happens after the pact begins to expire in 2025.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Hassan Rohani said on May 16 that Tehran will not flag under USA pressure.

The statement came a week after President Donald Trump announced that the USA would withdraw from the JCPOA despite the fact that Iran remained in compliance with the deal as verified by the IAEA in 11 inspection reports.

Meanwhile, Tehran is looking for guarantees from Europe that the deal can continue without the U.S. and warned it could restart its nuclear programme if talks fail.

At meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Brussels on May 15, the European signatories vowed to keep the JCPOA alive despite the US withdrawal. "The Iranian nation will resist against the United States plots", Rouhani was quoted as saying by ISNA news agency.
