Britain will spend £400 million (S$723 million) stripping high-rise buildings of the risky cladding blamed for last year's Grenfell Tower fire which left 71 people dead, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday (May 16).

Mrs May said that, since the Grenfell Tower fire killed 71 people in west London last June, fire services had visited more than 1,250 high-rise buildings, and immediate action had been taken to ensure the safety of every resident.

She told MPs: 'Councils and housing associations must remove unsafe cladding quickly but paying for these works must not undermine their ability to do important maintenance and fix work'.

Theresa May confirmed the unsafe materials would be removed during Prime Minister's Questions earlier today.

Mrs May's announcement at prime minister's questions in the House of Commons came before a Labour-led debate on Grenfell.

She warned that the work to remove and replace the cladding should be done promptly alongside other needed improvements to social housing.

Work has already started on 104 buildings, and the number of eligible schemes will be kept under review, the spokeswoman said.

Mrs May replied: "Councils and housing associations must remove risky cladding quickly, but paying for these works must not..."

The state's housing and public works minister, Mick de Brenni, has told the ABC that while it would cost millions to complete rectifications, the government could not put a price on safety.
