  • Ebola outbreak spreads to urban area as deaths mount

It was the first registered urban case of the deadly virus, with the city having a population of some 1 million people.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is stepping up its response to tackle the latest outbreak of Ebola in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and limit the spread of the disease. A first batch of 4,000 inoculations has arrived in the capital Kinshasa, with another 4,000 to follow soon after.

Apart from this, the virus outbreak occurred in an area with a traffic of about 7,000 persons a week by different means, which represents a significant risk of further spread, the health official stressed.

The swift response to quickly tackle the outbreak is in contrast to the response to the 2014 outbreak, when global agencies and governments were criticized for their slow response. "Since the announcement of the alert in Mbandaka, our epidemiologists are working in the field to identify people who have been in contact with suspected cases".

Authorities said they were tracing all air, river, and road routes in and out of the city to find the source of the virus.

It is the ninth time Ebola has been recorded in Congo since the disease made its first-known appearance near its northern Ebola river in the 1970s.

Ebola outbreak spreads to urban area as deaths mount

The BBC reports, "Ebola is a serious infectious illness that causes internal bleeding and often proves fatal".

The announcement came just as thousands of doses of the experimental Ebola vaccine arrived in the country, with vaccinations expected to commence this coming weekend.

Also on Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it was intensifying its vaccination campaign in Congo.

The WHO said it had sent 300 body bags for safe burials in affected communities.

The vaccine is complicated to use, requiring storage at a temperature between -60 and -80 degrees Celsius.
