  • Pep Guardiola: 'Liverpool will challenge for Premier League title next season'

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is confident that Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are likely to mount a strong Premier League title challenge next year.

Guardiola's team have been focused on rewriting the record books since clinching the English title nearly a month ago and they added one last landmark achievement on the final day of the season.

Gabriel Jesus struck with virtually the last kick at St Mary's to take City to the century mark in suitably dramatic fashion.

Guardiola's wild celebration with his backroom staff showed what it meant to the Spaniard for City to achieve yet another astonishing feat. "You can not achieve 100 points if you drop games and think it doesn't matter", he said.

"Sometimes, the guys who try to win, you have your reward". I think it's a record that will stay for a long time.

Manchester United hold informal talks with Willian's representatives
Among them, that if Abramovich was at all interested in winning the FA Cup he should sack Conte immediately. "It's a fantastic history that we've got".

"Our rhythm was not so high but during the game we were focused and at the end the excellent pass from Kevin and incredible finish from Gabriel made the difference to achieve that".

The 47-year-old also became the first City manager to win the award - handed to Chelsea manager Antonio Conte last season - after Roberto Mancini (2012) and Manuel Pellegrini (2014) missed out despite winning the Premier League.

They did take the lead through midfielder Andy King, leading to optimistic chants of "we want 10" from home supporters.

"The important thing is in the games we tried, we tried, we tried", Guardiola added.

Though Southampton could still have been relegated today mathematically, Saints fans knew their team's survival was all but guaranteed and there was a party atmosphere for much of the game at St. Mary's, made even better as news filtered in of Swansea's defeat to Stoke. "We are really looking forward to seeing him develop at City over the coming years".
