It will provide credits for the artist, songwriter, label and publisher on all music videos as well as fan-uploaded content that contains recorded music.

The latest development in YouTube's progression of updated features will put Musical Artists in the driver seat for once.

With its "Music in this video", YouTube is hinting that both sides can help each other out. According to Pitchfork, the platform's "music in this video" feature will include information about the producers, the writers, and the publishers in addition to the performing artist.

YouTube is adding a new music ID feature.

More than half a billion videos on YouTube will, from today, carry credits covering songwriter, label and publisher data - and that's just the start.

In a statement, YouTube says its new feature "strives to provide greater recognition and exposure to the people who contribute to the creative process".

The news is part of YouTube's wider efforts to build more bridges with rightsholders ahead of the relaunch of its YouTube Red and Google Play Music subscription services, which is expected to happen later this year.

Why YouTube has waited so long to present this music discovery feature is anyone's guess (Shazam anyone), but here it is.

Martin Bandier, Chairman and CEO, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, said: "Songwriters are essential to the success of the music industry, but too often their critical role gets overlooked".

Elton John said, "Songwriters are the heart and the soul of songs, so it's wonderful seeing them get the credit they deserve". "Music in this video" will be accessible by clicking "Show more" underneath a video. "What YouTube has done by making credits a priority to its platform, will allow a better music experience for all".

The company stated that "Music in this video" credits the "heroes" who came up with the music users love across the millions and millions of video content available on YouTube.
