One of those smart speaker manufacturers that achieved stronger growth than Amazon in the period was Google. Following Amazon is Google with 2.4 million shipments and Alibaba with 700,000 shipments. As you can see from the table below it pretty much owned the smart speaker market a year ago, but the situation is very different today. The company had an awesome 709% year-over-year improvement in first quarter shipments to 2.4 million units from the 300,000 it delivered during 2017's first three months. An Emarketer report from May 2017 found that Amazon dominates the voice-controlled speaker market in the U.S. at 70.6%, while Google Home captured 23.8%. Market leader Amazon is estimated to have shipped an impressive 4 million smart speakers during the quarter though its global market share has almost halved from the same period a year ago.

Google had the biggest effect on Amazon's market share, with sales of its devices hitting 26.5pc in Q1 of 2018, a major increase from just 12.4pc in the same quarter of previous year.

Amazon and Google together accounted for 70 percent of the global market in Q1, down from 84 percent in the previous quarter and 94 percent year-on-year.

The smart speaker market is heating up as the companies are focusing a lot on this segment. This space was mostly captured by Google which shipped 2.4 million units of Google Home during the same time capturing 26.5 per cent market space.

Jeff Bezos-led Amazon and internet giant Google accounted for 70% of the global smart speaker shipments in the first quarter of 2018, news agency IANS stated, citing a report by market research firm Strategy Analytics. "Alibaba and Xiaomi are leading the way in China and their strength in the domestic market alone is proving enough to propel them into the global top five", he added. A cheaper and smaller version may be on the way, which may compete better with standard Amazon and Google smart speakers. Apple on the other hand only has the HomePod, which went on sale in February with a high price tag of $349 (approximately Rs 23,700).
