The CDC suggests that recreational water needs to be cleaned better and the people who jump in also need to be more clean.

In some cases, they can even lead to death, USA health officials reported Thursday.

Between 2000 and 2014, the CDC recorded 493 cases of disease outbreaks related to "recreational water" - that is, pools, hot tubs, and water rides (water parks were also included in the calculations). The waterborne disease outbreaks have been quite in the news in the recent years that are highly found in the recreational water bodies such as pools, hot tubs, and water parks.

This parasite can be transmitted in the water during diarrhea, and that is likely how the pools got infected. It's usually contracted by swallowing pool water, often when it has been contaminated by diarrhea. Pool operators need to maintain proper cleaning practices and disinfectant levels to prevent bacteria from growing and causing illnesses in swimmers.

Although cases of Crypto have decreased since 2008, the decline has leveled off, Hlavsa said.

As per the report, published on May 18 in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), details that that going for a dip in the swimming pool or baths tubs of a hotel can expose you to a germ known as Cryptosporidium which is resistant even to the chlorine disinfectant.

These bacteria can enter the body through the skin, eyes or nose, Hlavsa explained.

According to the report, these infectious disease outbreaks resulted in eight deaths and 27,219 cases.

Sixteen percent of outbreaks are caused by Legionella and 13 percent are caused by Pseudomonas, which cause hot tub rash and swimmer's ear.

Those most susceptible to Legionella include people aged 50 or older, current or former smokers, people with chronic lung disease and those with weakened immune systems.

The most important way to prevent these outbreaks is to educate swimmers.

Dr. Marc Siegel is a professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. Employees with The Park District of Oak Park spent the day powerwashing and vacuuming as the suburb gets its two public pools ready for the summer season.

They have to be carefully cleaned and chlorinated, filters have to be changed regularly and the water has to be circulating, he said. This germ was identified in the pools, bathtubs, and also the water playgrounds. "What one does affects other people - that's the basic concept of public health", he added. "Don't swim or let your kids swim if sick with diarrhea", the CDC stated, recommending that swimmers with diarrhea stay out of public pools for at least two weeks. If Crypto is the cause of the diarrhea, wait until 2 weeks after diarrhea has stopped to go swimming. And change diapers in a changing area away from the water. Hot tubs, spas, and water playgrounds were some of the other settings for breakouts.

Healthy and Safe Swimming Week begins May 21.
