With less than two weeks to go before the coffee chain closes stores nationwide to educate its almost 175,000 workers on how not to discriminate against others, Starbucks (SBUX) this week found itself apologizing for doing just that. The alleged incident occurred at the La Cañada, Flintridge, located northeast of Burbank, California.

"He said he ordered his coffee, they asked him his name, he gave it to them, when it was ready they called out "Pedro" and later, when he looked at his cup, it has the racial slur "Beaner" printed on it where the name is supposed to be.

"It's like an insult overall", he said.

Customers at the location also commented on the racially-charged gesture. What can I tell you?

Hernandez said she called the store and they told her their employee couldn't understand what Pedro had told them.

It was a money scheme. "I told him I'm about to f-k yo s-t up, make sure you don't have a job tomorrow". Ennis said. " I really wanted to kill him".

Pedro told the station that he was initially offered a $50 gift card to make up for the incident, which he declined.

Following the incident, Starbucks released a statement saying that "this is not indicative of the type of experience we want our customers to have when they walk into our stores". "We asked his forgiveness and we are working to correct this".

Pedro said he was scheduled to meet with the location's manager on Thursday and hopes that Starbucks would punish the worker who printed the slur. On May 29, Starbucks is shuttering all of its stores in the US and corporate offices for the racial-bias training.

It is unclear what actions will be taken to address the recent allegations of racism at its La Cañada Flintridge location.

A Starbucks racial slur is the latest controversy for the chain as a Latino man's drink was reportedly labeled "Beaner", a derogatory term. The brand's cup is pictured in a shop on October 5, 2004 in New York City.
