  • Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak announcing his resignation of Malaysia's former ruling United Malays National Organisation in Kuala Lumpur

"This is the result of the search in one of the six premises", Mr Singh said, pointing to the hundreds of luxury items seized from the condominium.

"Exactly how much jewelry, I would not be able to say, because we know that we confiscated bags containing jewelry and the amount of jewelry is rather large". He declined to give details. The Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak, chaired its advisory board and, according to the US Justice Department, top executives and associates of Najib looted $4.5bn from the fund between 2009 and 2014, laundering it through the US, Singapore, Switzerland and other countries.

When asked if Mr Najib's wife, Madam Rosmah Mansor, was also being investigated, Dr Mahathir said that the police were given the responsibility of investigating all criminal cases, The Star reported.

The police raids on Mr Najib's office, private residence and several other properties linked to him in an upmarket area of the capital have been going on for several days, in the full view of the media.

Anwar told reporters he needed "time and space" to recuperate and be with his family, and shared that he has been booked for speaking engagements overseas. Police officials did not comment.

Amer Kent, who voted against Najib's party, climbed out of his vehicle and said he had driven all the way from Penang, some 350 km (220 miles) "to see the thief's house", and take a photograph to post on his Facebook page.

Razak denied the charges of wrongdoing in what is being termed as the world's biggest financial scandal but the latest raids and recovery could turn the story for the man who is no longer in power.

Mahathir has said he expects to run the government for one to two years but has signaled that the reins would be turned over to Anwar eventually.

Mr Najib has been embroiled in a multibillion-dollar scandal since 2015 after around US$700 million (S$932.8 million) - alleged to be 1MDB funds - appeared in his personal accounts before the election in 2013. "Najib wasted a lot of Malaysia's money".

Mahathir, who ruled from 1981 to 2003, came out of retirement to spearhead a four-party alliance that won a surprise victory in the May 9 elections, ending almost 60 years of rule by the Basiran National coalition.

The operation on Thursday night was part of a continuing investigation ordered by newly-installed Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Najib.

"This is an opportunity for both of them to move forward for the sake of the country", he said. "If there is a case against them, we will take action".

News of the raid on Najib's house became a nationwide talking point, with an endless stream of onlookers visiting the neighbourhood to see the cordon around their former prime minister's property for themselves.

Our correspondent said that the Hermes bags cost anywhere between tens of thousands of USA dollars up to $200,000 each.

Amar Singh also explained that the iron safe found in Najib's residence at Jalan Langgak Duta, Taman Duta here was still in the process of being drilled to be opened. "I must thank the people of Malaysia", Anwar said.
