The planned Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russian Federation to Germany raises United States intelligence and military concerns since it would allow Moscow to place new listening and monitoring technology in the Baltic Sea, a senior USA official said on Thursday (17 May).
Tory former Cabinet minister John Whittingdale later raised concern about the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russian Federation to Central and Western Europe. At the same time, Oudkirk has not specified what kind of devices are in question.
According to sources in the White house and Brussels, trump announced his position on the pipeline at talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel in April.
Congress passed the legislation in response to Russia's intervention in Ukraine and its suspected USA election interference, giving the government authority to act against any Russian energy projects including Nord Stream 2, the envoy said.
Oudkirk rejected suggestions that Washington opposes the pipeline because it wants to increase US liquefied natural gas exports to Europe.
Earlier, trump had already criticized the construction of the Nord stream-2, saying at a meeting with Baltic leaders that "Germany would pay billions of dollars for energy resources from Russian Federation...and this is bad".

Meeting with North Korea a step in the right direction
The White House said Wednesday morning it is not surprised North Korea is threating to call off next month's historic meeting. Bolton called the decision by North Korea to scrap meetings with South Korea "discouraging" and evidence of "old thinking".
The Nord Stream 2 project is also raising security concerns and could lead to USA sanctions, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Diplomacy Sandra Oudkirk said Thursday in Berlin.
The Thirsk and Malton MP said: "Despite the fact oil and gas exports make up 70% of Russia's worldwide trade, these are not now covered under the European Union sanction regime due to the high reliance of the European Union on Russian gas exports".
Oudkirk said Washington's objections included past Russian moves to turn off gas supplies to Ukraine and other countries, adding that it would perpetuate "vulnerabilities" in Russian-European ties for another 30 to 40 years.
"The new project would permit new technologies to be placed along the pipeline route, and that is a threat", she said.
In early may of 2018 in Germany started the construction of Nord stream-2, although not all countries have given permission for the construction of this pipeline.
