Hawaiian Authorities Work to Protect Power Plant From Lava Flow

Lava from a Kilauea volcano fissure flows past trees downed by lava towards the Pacific Ocean, on Hawaii's Big Island, on May 21, 2018.
Geologists say that the Kilauea explosion is significant and especially unsafe because both the summit and a series of fissures on its side are exploding simultaneously. The explosions can also build a small cone, similar to regular volcanic cinder cones. Laze, a word combination of lava and haze, contains hydrochloric acid steam along with volcanic glass particles.
On Saturday and Sunday, two separate streams of lava ran into the sea, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), severing Highway 137, which runs along the south east coast of Hawaii's Big Island.
Over the past several days, lava has erupted up to 300 feet in the air in some areas, while lava flows reached the ocean over the weekend.
Hawaii County civil defense officials say lava from an active fissure has destroyed an old warehouse that was used in early research and development at the Puna Geothermal plant.
Hawaiian authorities scrambled Tuesday to protect a major power plant from approaching lava, in the latest threat from renewed eruption of the Big Island's Kilauea volcano almost three weeks ago.
Puna Geothermal, owned by Nevada's Ormat Technologies, was shut down shortly after Kilauea began spewing lava on May 3.

About two-thirds of Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park closed May 11, right around the start of the summer tourist season - and it remains closed, likely deterring a substantial chunk of the park's more than 2 million annual visitors.
On Tuesday, Kilauea sent an ash plume thousands of feet into the sky, creating more havoc on the Big Island.
Since Kilauea's massive eruption, rivers of fire have swallowed at least 40 structures, hurled lava through cracks in the earth's surface and devastated livelihoods.
