Kumaraswamy's swearing-in ceremony was attended by a galaxy of opposition leaders coming together in a show of unity against the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Among the prominent political leaders present on the huge dais were UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BSP supremo Mayawati, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, expelled Janata Dal-United president Sharad Yadav and Communist Party of India-Marxist General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.

Mr Kumaraswamy said that he had discussion with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also head of the Trinamool Congress, has advised on several issues. Other members of the council of ministers will be inducted after the Kumaraswamy government wins the trust vote on Friday. "This government will be protected by local Congress leaders and our leaders", he added. Outgoing Siddaramaiah, Yeddyurappa who had to resign after BJP failed to prove the majority on the floor of the House and now Kumaraswamy who has taken the oath of the office today and will face the floor test on Thursday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated HD Kumaraswamy and G Parameshwara on Wednesday for becoming the Chief Minister and the deputy Chief Minister, respectively, of Karnataka. "It is left to the Congress to decide who it wants in the ministry".
