Lee Westwood is Bjorn again in Ryder Cup role

Westwood is one of the Europeans' most accomplished Ryder Cup players in history. Westwood, however, is coming off one of his most disappointing Ryder Cups, having finished 0-3 at Hazeline in 2016.

"You only need to look at the record books to see that their Ryder Cup pedigree speaks for itself", Bjorn said in announcing his vice-captains. "I was keen to see that kind of angle to it and, like I said, when Thomas asked me, I jumped at the chance".

McDowell, 38, who has fallen to 239th in the world but is a two-time victor at the Ryder Cup venue, added: 'I'm looking forward to a summer of helping out Thomas but also believing this move will help my golf, since it'll take the expectation level off my shoulders'.

Between them, the glittering quartet of new recruits have all been on at least three winning sides - Westwood has been part of seven, would you believe - and have amassed a grand cumulative total of 56 points for the Ryder Cup cause.

Donald is missing with a back injury but Bjorn would be happy if any of the four made the team on merit and had to hand back their vice-captains' bib.

Harrington is the only vice-captain with previous experience of the role, but Donald has never tasted defeat in four appearances as a player and McDowell secured the winning point at Celtic Manor in 2010, as well as winning the French Open twice at this year's venue.

Granted, neither is playing well, if playing at all, and were huge outsiders to make final line-up at Le Golf National. "We know what we are up against", Bjorn said.

Bjorn also shrugged off the status of Jim Furyk's United States of America team as odds-on favourites to retain the trophy in Paris which they won rather comfortably at Hazeltine two years ago.

"It's the best place you can be as any sportsman".

Bjorn's group of assistants has combined for 26 Ryder Cups.

"This will be very different for me, watching, rather than playing, but I'm hoping my past experience will help Team Europe regain the Ryder Cup". "Of course, my ideal scenario is that I hit a hot streak of form over the summer and force my way in to the team".

"We know what we are up against", Bjorn said ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

And although the Edinburgh-based 45-year-old and his fellow vice-captains could still qualify to face the United States at Le Golf National in Paris from 28-30 September, Westwood (117th) is the only one of the five now ranked inside the world's top 200.
