The exterior design however has been drastically changed from the 488 GTB, with Ferrari claiming inspiration from the legendary F40 - in particular at the rear end.

Ferrari has taken the wraps off yet another one-off creation - the new SP38.

As it was the case with the carmaker's previous projects of the sort, the newcomer is based on an existing model and we're referring to the 488 GTB.

The all-new bodywork, in a newly conceived three-layer metallic red, marks a radical departure from the language aesthetic of the donor auto.

The resulting shape concentrates its visual mass over the rear wheels and extends to a strongly tapered nose with thin headlights.

Up front, inset headlights were created to be as thin as possible, with daytime running lights relocated to a slim bumper lip similar to the 308 GTB. Designed by the Ferrari Design Centre on the chassis and running gear of the standard 488 GTB, this unique vehicle reflects the specific vision of a client with a deep passion for racing.

Gone are the 488 GTB's massive side scoops and in their place are sleeker more subtle intakes, reminiscent of the F40's C-pillar vents. Ferrari haven't elaborated on the interior spec although we are sure that their Taylor Made program produced something very special for this one-off! Built atop the chassis and drivetrain of a standard 488 GTB, Ferrari made a new body that was inspired by its owner's motorsport leanings. The glass engine cover morphs into a slatted cover across the engine bay for additional cooling.

If the 488's engine is unchanged, the SP38 will rely on a twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 that puts out 661 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. It will be on public display at the upcoming Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on Saturday 26 May, before being delivered to its proud owner - who has, incidentally, already driven a number of hot laps on Ferrari's Fiorano test circuit, across the road from the factory.
