Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen said on Tuesday that she was unaware of the intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election to try and help President Donald Trump win.

At a briefing attended by 40 or more members of the 435-member U.S. House of Representatives, the heads of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Homeland Security Department and the director of national intelligence told members to urge states and cities overseeing elections to be prepared for threats. "I am not aware of that".

Nielsen added that Russian Federation had attempted to target "public confidence on both sides" in 2016 and would continue to do so in the future.

Former United States Director of Intelligence James Clapper said he thinks Russian meddling "turned the election" on Wednesday's episode of "1A".

Houlton said the language used by the reporter - CNN's Manu Raju - did not "reflect the specific language" in the intelligence community's report.

The chairman of the House panel, Devin Nunes, has been extensively criticised for his closeness to the Trump White House.

In his new memoir, Facts and Fears: Hard Truths From a Life in Intelligence, Clapper describes evidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin swayed the election in a bid to secure Trump's election as "staggering".

Ireland's abortion referendum - BBC Newsnight
Outlawing it has never stopped it from happening, it's only made it more likely that women will suffer while trying to access one. The same hashtag was used in the same-sex marriage referendum in 2016, encouraging ex-pats overseas to return to Ireland to vote.

"I do not believe that I've seen that conclusion that specific intent was to help President Trump win", Nielsen insisted. "No, there are not tanks in the streets, but what's happening right now goes to the heart of who we are as a nation, and I say this not as a Democrat who lost an election but as an American afraid of losing a country". "Russian goals included undermining faith in the USA democratic process and harming a candidate's electability and potential presidency".

Nielsen's remarks, which come amid her reported tensions with Trump over immigration, sparked instant condemnation. "Importantly, they targeted both major political parties".

Nielsen said she supports, more broadly, the intelligence community's findings about Russian meddling.

"The Secretary has previously reviewed the Intelligence Community's assessment and agrees with it - as she stated today and previously".

Hillary Clinton took a jab at President Donald Trump, pulling out a Russian ushanka hat while delivering a commencement speech at Yale University.

"I don't believe our democracy can function for long on lies, particularly when inconvenient and hard facts spoken by the practitioners of truth are dismissed as 'fake news, '" Clapper writes.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declined to answer questions about whether he agreed with the 2017 intelligence community assessment.
