  • Fiat Chrysler Is Recalling 4.8 Million Vehicles Over Cruise Control Flaw

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV recalled about 4.8 million US vehicles to fix a software glitch that could lead to cruise control staying on, despite a driver's attempt to deactivate the system. Dodge vehicles included are the 2015 to 2018 Challenger, and the 2014 to 2018 Charger, Journey and Durango, while affected Jeeps include the 2014 through 2018 Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and the 2018 Wrangler.

The recall addresses what Fiat Chrysler called an "extremely rare" series of events that could lead to drivers being unable to cancel cruise control, a electronic device that allows a vehicle to maintain a constant speed without driver intervention.

Fiat Chrysler says the condition can occur if the cruise control accelerates at the same time an electrical short-circuit happens.

You may still hear the engine revving, but as long as you keep the brakes on, the auto should stop. In the event that cruise control can not be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to Neutral, placing the vehicle in Park once it has stopped.

Drivers could override the cruise control in case of a failure either by braking or switching the vehicle into neutral.

Heavy rain, flooding expected in South Florida over Memorial Day Weekend

"Notwithstanding the extraordinary circumstances that must exist before a customer would experience a problem, we are taking this action because we are fully committed to vehicle safety", Mark Chernoby, Fiat Chrysler's chief technical compliance officer, said in a statement. Regardless of which option is used, cruise control will be cancelled once the auto is put in park. That happened in a 2017 Dodge Journey, which had been supplied as a rental auto.

The Italian-American auto maker said no injuries or crashes were related to the large recall campaign.

The full list of affected vehicles in the USA can be found below.

The recall includes 15 Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram models from six model years with gasoline engines and automatic transmissions. The recalled vehicles have collectively been driven more than 200 billion miles. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued an advisory to "strongly encourage" that consumers follow the directive. The fix will, unsurprisingly, be installed free of charge, and the automaker will begin alerting those customers affected from next week.
