This issue is very relevant due to the emergence of private companies, including Elon Musk's SpaceX, that are venturing out in space. The complex was essentially completed with the retirement of NASA's space shuttles in 2011. A third (33 percent) do think that these private companies could advance the industry even without the agency. Eighty percent say the International Space Station has been a good investment for the country.

The three astronauts aboard the Russian Soyuz rocket are scheduled to arrive at the orbital space laboratory by the end of the week. Overall, 58% of USA adults believe it is essential to include the use of human astronauts in the future US space program, while 41% say astronauts are not essential.

Around half of Americans share the opinion that people will travel routinely to space as tourists over the next 50 years. However, a great deal of Americans surveyed in the pool tend to be skeptical about whether private companies will minimize space debris.

Twenty-six percent of Americans have a great deal of confidence that private companies will be able to build safe and reliable spacecraft, and 23 percent don't have too much confidence, or have no confidence at all.
